TAJUK 7: SMK TUNKU MAHMOOD ISKANDAR PARIT SAIDI

Parit Saidi, Batu Pahat
"HIDUP BERJASA"

.

Cycling on the straight tarmac road without any challenge except need slightly more road safety conscious.

  • SK Seri Rejo Sari, Senggarang
  • SK Parit Kadir, Senggarang
  • SK Seri Timbul (Pt Seri Dalam), Parit Raja

  • Maktab Melayu Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) - 1905
  • Kolej Tunku Kurshiah, Seremban (TKC) - 1947
  • Maktab Tentera DiRaja, Sungai Besi ( RMC) - 1952 (khusus berteraskan ketenteraan)
  • Sekolah Menengah Dato' Abdul Razak, Seremban (SDAR) - 1956
  • Sekolah Menengah Tun Fatimah, Johor Bahru (STF) - 1956
  • Sekolah Menengah Tunku Abdul Rahman, Ipoh  (STAR)- 1957
  • Sekolah Menengah Sultan Abdul Halim, Jitra (SSAH) - 1963
  • Sekolah Menengah Sultan Alam Shah, Cheras, KL (SAS) 1963
  • Kolej Islam Klang (KIK) - 1967 (khusus berteraskan pendidikan islam)
  • Sekolah Menengah Perempuan Jalan Kolam Air (Seri Puteri), KL (SPSP) - 1968

MY 5 YEAR TOUR IN STMI : 1972-76

Since its opening in 1965, STMI only offered a secondary school studies up to Form 5. There were two streams or specialisations for the newly reporting Form One students, Industrial Arts or 'Seni Perusahaan (P)' and Agricultural Science or 'Sains Pertanian (T)'. Everybody must gone through these streams for SRP level. After the SRP examination, the students had only single choice for their Form 4 and 5 in this school, it was Arts Stream (Aliran Sastera). Other than the excellent students who got the offer to go to Boarding School, those who opted for Science Stream they have to go to Sekolah Dato Bentara Luar (SDBL), Batu Pahat. Or, if they obtained a good results and interested to apply, they could apply Technical School. At that time, Vocational School was established for the SRP holders who obtained 'unfavourable result' such as getting aggregate above A24 or Grade B.
.
Initially the Form One for my batch was divided into four classes, 3 classes for P (1P1, 1P2 and 1P3 and one T class (1T1). However, after some negotiation (to make it balance), 1P3 was converted into 1T2. I was in 1P1.

1972- Tingkatan 1P1

All the Form One students were placed in the afternoon session due to insufficient classrooms. However after about two or three months, upon the completion of new 2-story building, all the Form One changed to morning session.

My class teacher was Cikgu Mohamed bin Sanip. He also taught me Seni Perusahaan (now, the name of this subject had changed to 'Reka Cipta' or 'Kemahiran Hidup'). The list of ther teachers were: Cikgu Aishah bt Taib taught us BM and Sejarah (Cikgu Esah was very motherly character), Cikgu Aishah was also previously the Afternon Session Supervisor (representative for the Headmaster). Our English teacher was Mr Teh Et Tang, Cik Fahariah Hamzah taught me Pengetahuan Islam, Cikgu Amar bin Hj Habib taught us a subject of Ilmu Alam and Cikgu Habibah Ikhsan taught us Mathematic, Cikgu Kadir Maidin for Rampaian Sains and whilst Cikgu Hamzah Hj Selak teaching Arts.

1973- Tingkatan 2P1

My class teacher was Cikgu Saim bin Selamat (almarhum) Al Fatihah for him. He also taught me BM (later he married to Cikgu Fahariah, (my guru Agama in Form 1)- Cikgu Saim's was also neighbour to my parent in-law at Taman Broleh. He passed away in 1990s. My English teacher was Mr Johnson Gomez and Miss Vasantha K.Nair), Ilmu Alam (Cikgu Zakiah Shuib - other than the Headmaster, she was the only graduate teacher in my school at that time), Sejarah (Cikgu Raja Abas bin Mohd Noor (almarhum)- so many names need to be memorised in Historry, so in order for the pupil easier to memorised those names, he liked to give nickname to the students such is Ogotai, Qutbuddin Aibak, Aurangzeb etc), Pengetahuan A/Islam (Ust Omar Hj Salleh), Seni Perusahaan (Cikgu Mohamed Sanip) and Lukisan (Cikgu Hamzah Selak). My teacher for Ilmu Hisab Moden (Cikgu Habibah Ikhsan was very emotional type and highly favouratism- she would only focus or pay attention to top 5 students in the class), Rampaian Sains (Kadir Maidin -the teacher who made me 'lost interest' in Science subject), anyway, I can't write here why, 'not good' to talk bad thing about somebody.

The real competition (in the class) started in Form Two. The final result of Form One revealed the talent. Names like Zalila Jonid (from SK Seri Timbul), Kamisan Sujak and Abd Rahman Mokhtar (from SK Pt Kadir), Jainudin Mohayat (from SK Pt Kemang) and Norhaya Subari (from SK kg Baru) were among my close rivals for the top FIVE in my batch.

.
Semasa Hari Guru tahun 1973, kelas aku membuat persembahan 2 buah lagu Inggeris yang diajar oleh Cikgu Vashantha K.Nair (guru sementara Bahasa Inggeris)  Red River Valley and Black and White.

RED RIVER VALLEY

From this valley they say you are going.
We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile
For they say you are taking the sunshine
That has brightened our pathway a while

So come sit by my side if you love me
Do not hasten to bid me adieu
Just remember the Red River Valley
And the one that has loved you so true

BLACK AND WHITE

The ink is black, the page is white
Together we learn to read and write
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight

And now a child can understand
That this is the law of all the land, all the land

The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light

And now at last we plainly see
We'll have a dance of Liberty, Liberty!

The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
The whole world looks upon the sight, a beautiful sight

The world is black, the world is white
It turns by day and then by night
A child is black, a child is white
Together they grow to see the light, to see the light

C'mon, get it, get it
Ohh-ohhhh, yeah, yeah
Keep it up now, around the world
Little boys and little girls
Yeah, yeah-eah, oh-ohhh

The real competition (in the class) started in Form Two. The final result of Form One revealed the talent. Names like Zalila Jonid (from SK Seri Timbul), Kamisan Sujak and Abd Rahman Mokhtar (from SK Pt Kadir), Jainudin Mohayat (from SK Pt Kemang) and Norhaya Subari (from SK kg Baru) were among my close rivals for the top FIVE in my batch.

in absent: Sanusi Jaafar (almarhum)

Note: From two photos above, you can see, in 1974 (those years), for women at the age 15 to 17, not covering their 'aurat' (not wearing tudung) was something normal. Included the woman teachers, even my 'ustazah' was not too!!!.

In Form 3, I started to get active in school co-curriculum. Besides continued as aScout Movement Member, I was also a Prefect, Librarian and Treasurer for Persatuan Bahasa Malaysia.
As a Treasurer, I did not have a Bank Account, and not even a account book. All the money collected from students (through class rep) were kept in a MILO tin????. My Goodness.

This was 3P1 classroom in 1974, now become a History Galerry

After my 'SRP', I was offered to go to Form 4 Science Stream at Sekolah Dato Bentara Luar (SDBL). As i mentioned earlier, I did not like Science subject. I lost my interest in Science when I was in Form One and Two. Eventhough I obtained Credit 3 in my SRP, I refused to go to Science Stream.
The 4 top scorers in SRP Exam 1974 were offered to go to Science Stream in Sekolah Berasrama Penuh:
  • Zalila bt Junid selected to Sek Men Seri Puteri, Jln Kolam Air, KL;
  • Jainudin Mohayat selected to Sekolah Alam Shah, Cheras;
  • Kamisan Suja' selected to Sekolah Alam Shah, Cheras; and
  • Abd Rahman Mokhtar selected to Sek Men Sains Johor, Kluang.

I was in 5th position with A11, was not offered to any boarding school because I did not get distinction (A) for my Maths and Science subjects. Only offered for Science Stream at SDBL, Batu Pahat. BUT I preferred to stay back to look after STMI.
.
All of the four above performed very successful in their SPM. Zalila went to UM for matriculation, Kamisan, Jainuddin and Rahman went to UTM Jalan Gurney. I met them in UTM, Kamisan was in the same Architecture course with me, Jainuddin did his degree in Electrical Engineering, and Rahman took up degree in Petroleum Engineering.
.
Unfortunately, Rahman was having problem related to 'mental disorder' and dropped from the course in his second year (1979). Based on the conversation with 'trusted' friends, I 'think', Rahman was so ambitious to be a best student in his course, and his 'mental capability' could not catch and keep abreast with his need. I was informed that he situation still like that until today. Alas....
.
WHILE waiting my SRP result, I did work with the my Chinaman neighbour (Tee Ter @ Ah Ter) as a construction worker. My pay was RM5 per day. Ah Ter was normally get a sub-contracting jobs from the Malay contractor. Most of our work sites were in Pontian District. Some of the construction works that had my hand were 'pump well' at Klinik Parit Selangor, sea wall at bandar Pontian, Pasar Pekan Nanas, Tok Kong China at Kayu Ara Pasong, Sg Ulu Boh and many more. Good experience working under the sun hotness!
.
.
1975: Tingkatan 4A (Aliran Sastera)
.
As I mentioned earlier, for the Form 4 in STMI we did not have choices, only Arts Stream. After SRP,  I received an offer to go for Science Stream at SDBL, Batu Pahat but I refused to go. So, I retained in STMI. Leave me behind as the best student in the school then. Hahaha. We had 2 classes of Form 4 (A and B).
.
Since my early school days, one of my ambition was to be a military officer.  I heard a lot of interesting thing about the life of a 2nd Lieutenant, BUT not the Air Force. I knew nothing about the Air Force life until my cousin Amer Agos joined the RMAF in 1977.
.
After my SRP I applied for Royal Military College (RMC) however it was not successful.  May be at that time RMC did not consider student from Malay Medium School.  Still dissatisfied with that result, I applied for Armed Forces Apprentices Trade School (AFATS) in Port Dickson.  I was called for a week interview in Port Dickson (PD).  In the last 'night' of the interview session I and another 3-4 friends (interviewees) went out for dinner at PD town.  On the way back to barrack, we were stopped by AFATS senior students.  We were pulled out into the dark area near to the guard room.
They advised (brain washed) us not to proceed with our ambition to join AFATS.  According to them, they were so regret with their decision to joint AFATS. They said that, "AFATS is not a place for you to be an officer.  With the hard and tough military training, it is impossible for you to be successful in academic.  If you are very lucky and score first grade or 2nd grade plus good in Maths, and Science subject you may be considered to joint cadet school or RMC.  But if you obtain 3rd grade, you will be channel to be craftsman...equivalent to Prebet soldier".
.
So they strongly recommended and appealed to us, to reconsider our intent or 'niat'  to join AFATS.  They said that we will regret later.
.
After that 'meeting' we were in dilemma, and there were discussion among the candidates.  Some showed a positive response and some otherwise. The negative response was from those who very eager to wear a military uniform. I was 50-50 at that time but more toward likelyhood.
.
End up, I failed my medical check up and sent back in the forth day.
.
The real story was appeared 8 years later (1983). Then  I was a 2nd Lt, working in RMAF Base Kuantan, I met a friend of mine, who was together with me attending interview for AFATS in Port Dickson. He was a Craftman and working under me.
.
Be among the 'cleverest' left behind (in STMI), I became the most popular student in Form 4. I was elected to be a class monitor and continued my appointment as a Senior School Prefect. Other than looking after the 'peacefulness' of the class, I had been given a task to take the students' attendance everyday. This was actually the duty of the classteacher, but he delegated to me. A trust.
.
My classteacher and he also taught English and History was Cikgu Uiop bin Kasim (almarhum). His English class did not follow the syllabus. He has his own way of teaching. In order to improve our English proficiency he introduced English Literature, using story books title ' The Three Musketeers '.
He and Cikgu Hamzah Selak (almarhum) were the among best teacher I ever had in our school days.  Both of them has their own strengths and specialties.

.
This year also, we had the opportunity to participate in the Johore Scouts Jamboree at Kem Sekakap, Mersing. For the Scouts, Jamboree is a great thing and a proud to participate in it. In this jamboree, we met a lot of friends from various places. We performed various activities in two year (75/76) to raise our fund with the objective to participate in National Jamboree in Kuching in 1977. Some of the activities were film show at school padang, selling T-Shirt, opening food stalls etc. However, in 1977 I was in UTM, so unable to take part. Jamaludin Tamjis was lucky to have that opportunity. Admired with his story....he managed to have many adik angkat from Sarawak.

1976: Tingkatan 5A
.
My class teacher for this year who also taking subject Sejarah was Encik Uiop bin Kasim. This was his second consecutive year for him to take up as our class teacher.
.
Unfortunately, I lost almost all pictures of 1976, including class photo, Prefect Board photo and Comm-Members of various Societies.
.
For the subject Sastera Melayu we received newly reporting teacher, Encik Selamat Mansor he is UM graduate, he involved in road accident before and severely injured (comma) especially his head and leg and suffered permanent disability (tempang) after his recovery from hospitalisation,  Cikgu Selamat was also very friendly and close to the students.
.
The subject of Bahasa Melayu was taken by our Headmaster Encik Rashidi Abd Rahman and this subject was the only subject taken by him in the school.
.
Hisab Moden: Puan Zauliah Ramli - she taught me start from Form 2 till Fm 5. F2- Math, Fm 3-Math & Sc, F4 - Math & Sc, and  & F5 -Math).This because in our school we short of Mathematics teacher.

Geografi: Puan Rubiah Badri (based on the website, she was the Principal of SM Taman Tun Aminah, JB (1998-2001). Very nice and soft spoken teacher. STMI was her first school upon her graduation from UM. emmm anything special about her? she liked to wear kebaya pendek... the best view was when she bowed infront of my table to check my work. Eemm... what do you expect from 17 years old boy? Just a silly and naughty kampung boy. I am not sure what about my other friends thinking at that time. We never talked about this matter. But, itu duluuuuu. Where is she now? I think she is retired. Hemmmm..I hope she do not read my blog....Maafkan saya, zahir dan batin CIKGU.

My teacher for subject 'Sivik' was Cikgu Md Yasin Kamari (almarhum). He was an orator, later he became fulltime politician, elected as a State Legislative Member of Johor (Parit Raja) and then Member of Parliament (Seri Gading).  He was later appointed as Political Secretary to Minister of Judiciary (Dr Mahathir) and his highest achievement before his death (1991) was the Deputy Minister of Rural Development (1989). His body was rested at Masjid Pt Haji Ali. (Semoga Allah cucuri rahmat ke atas roh almarhum).

Head of Prefects.
.
I was elected to be a school prefect since my Form 3 (1974), the Head Prefect for that was my brother, Khamim. What I could remember, the blue neck-tie for the Prefect issued by the school, inhereted from our senior so many years before.  Come to my time, the neck-tie was already faded and look lousy. I did not wear that neck-tie but I did not have money to buy.  So, I did my own, I cut my old white trousers and sew it to become a neck tie.  To make it blue, I coloured with  blue permanent ink (we called it dakwat Keling).  Until, later my cousin (Amir) who worked in Singapore bought me a beautiful stripe-blue pattern neck-tie for me.  It was the best neck-tie at that time.
.
Today, even in Primary School, everybody is wearing neck-tie.
.
In Form 5, I was elected as the Head of Prefect.  Our family created the history in STMI when 'adik-beradik' were elected as the Head of Prefect. I am sure not either this record had been broken.
.
School Representative.
  • Sport. I represented my school in athletic (discus- lempar cakera) since Form 3. In every annual sport day, I championed (gold medal) the discus, so automatically selected to represent the school for MSSD in Batu Pahat town (Stadium Jalan Ampuan). MSSD Sport Day created its own historical story in my life. In that stadium I first met (just looking from far) my future wife in 1975 (I was in Form 4). She was also representing her school. She was a school runnner. I would tell the full story of my love story in other topic.
  • English Language Competition. I was not active during my Lower Primary school (Form 1 to 3). After my SRP, all the excellent and brilliant students already disappeared (went to Boarding School or Science Stream in SDBL. So, left me be a best choice!!.  Kamdani, Halim, Yasman and I were among the blue-eye boys in the school. All the way round representing our school in the Inter-Malay Secondary School in Batu Pahat District for English Language Campaign.
    • Debate. We lost in first round held in SM Tun Aminah (STA), Batu Pahat. Off course STA was the best Malay School in the district, due to its location in town area.
    • Story Telling. I represented the school in the competition hosted by SM Senggarang. Only received a consolation.
    • Quiz Contest. We became the champion in the final round held in SM Semerah. This was a record done by STMI students.
.
My Arts and Scout Teacher
.
Cikgu Hamzah Hj Selak was my best  and closest teacher forever. His wife, Kak Amanah was also very nice. He  taught me Seni Lukis from Form 1 to Form 5 and I joined Pengakap also from Form I until F5. After I left my school, I maintain my relationship with him until his death in 2014. Every Hari Raya i will make an attempt to visit his family (he is staying in Parit Kemang).
.
In my school activities, Boy Scouts was my first priority. I did not know why, this time my father keep silence when i decided to joing Scouts. May be, I am big enough to go for outing activities. I passed my Tenderfoot Class in Form 1 and my First Class in Form 2. My highest achievement in Scouts activities was 'Pengakap Raja' (King Scout). I passed the test conduct at Jubilee Camp, Tanjung Labuh in 1976.
.
As a Scout member you must memorize the "Persetiaan Pengakap", "10 Undang-undang Pengakap" and "Riwayat Hidup Lord Baden Powell" (the founder of the Scouts Movement). He visited Tanah Melayu in 1934. (picture below are Lord Baden Powell, camping activities and 'King Scout Badge').

My Best Friend
.
My best friend in Secondary School was Abdul Halim bin Sulaiman. His father was a religious teacher (on contract) in Brunei Darussalam. He was staying in Parit Kadir with his uncle. After SPM he went for Lower Six at SDBL and later he went to UKM for his degree. I met him first after my SPM was in Kuantan (sometimes 1985/86). He was teaching at ADABI School Kuantan and later transferred to ADABI Muar.
.
Later he quit teaching and joined Jabatan Agama Islam Negeri Sembilan (JAINS). He is now one of the Ketua Penolong Pengarah in JAINS.  Prior to this he was the Pengetua for Sek Men Sains Agama Kuala Pilah.
.
Latest news:  I went to Halim's house (at Taman Pinang Gading, Sikamat, Seremban) on 5th March 2011 for his daughter's (Khairunnisa') wedding.
.
Zero-Based Businessman

For so many years, the tuckshop/canteen in my school ran by 'Cikgu Sukardi Md Noor' (then a religious teacher) and his wife (Kak Idah). In early 1977, the Headmaster (Cikgu Rashidi) did not allow him to continue his operations. He approached (and coaxed) me to take over the canteen temporarily, while waiting for the permanent replacement.

I was quite close with my HM due to many reasons. First, I was the Head Prefect, second; I was the potential best student (for SPM) and also the most active student; and thirdly, during his young time he was teaching together with my uncle (Acik), Hj Razikan.

I did not know how to refuse his invitation. I did not have any experience in running any business. So, he provided the basic operating capital for the business, not in cash, but in good/junk food to sell such as tea, milk and sweets. The other food except hot/soft drink the business were based on commision. I got the supply of other food from various sources. The main menu; such as mee goreng, mee rebus, mee hun goreng or lontong, I got from the previous canteen operator (Cikgu Sukardi), the epok-epok supplied by Kak Amanah (wife to Cikgu Hamzah), my sister (Rahimah) also suppled some types of kueh.

In running the canteen, I was assisted by two Ferries (Faridahs) - Faridah Nurulhadi and Faridah Munafaat. Both were my classmate from Form One. I paid both of them for RM60/month.

Actually, I did not get the profit from that business. My canteen was broken down by the thiefs twice. I lost some cash and items.

After getting my SPM result, I stopped my business and I heard, I was taken over by the old operator. Anyway, that 3 months exposed me with a lot of experience.

Hari Guru
.
Biasa murid sekolah ni suka hari CUTI UMUM. Aku tak suka cuti sekolah kerana, bila cuti aku kena pergi bagi makan nyamuk... kene ke kebun. Pagi-pagi kene menoreh, siap mesin getah dah dekat jam 12 tengahari. Kalau hujan, tak leh noreh kena tebas rumpun/semak (orang Jawa kata mancah).
Back to 'Hari Guru', Teachers Day was the day where I can show off my talent. During the Teachers Day, each class has to perform a presentation (on the stage). No classroom activities (study) for that day. The presentation can be a group song, poet, comedy, choir etc. I never missed to represent my class. My favourite performance was 'lawak jenaka'. My performance in 1975 was 'Tukang Jahit' and 1976 was 'Kedet Tentera'.
.
AFTER MY SPM
.
I sat my SPM in 1976 and scored Grade 1 with 16 Aggregate. Again, proudly I came up as a Best Student for that year. For your info, since my school (STMI) established in 1969, the the First Grader achiever only appeared in 1973 . And my Year (1976) produced the biggest number of 1st Grader, that was 7. Eurika!. Myself, Kamdani Salleh (my kampongmate and study partner), Yasman Tamsir, Ahmad Noh Jeni, Mohd Adil Shukor, Abdul Halim Sulaiman and Ngatijah Miskam. Before that, between 1-3 only.
.
Those who qualified to further to Form Six went to Sek Dato Bentara Luar (SDBL). So, I also reported there for my Lower Six. However my stay in SDBL took less than a month when myself, Yasman, Kamdani and Ahmad Noh were selected for Lower Six at Sekolah Alam Shah SAS), Cheras whilst Ngatijah for Sekolah Menengah Jalan Kolam Air.
.
k(Note: Kamdani is now a teaching in my primary school (SK Seri Rejo Sari), Yasman (suddenly on 3 March 2011, after more than 33 years get separated, I received a call from Yasman.  He is UM Graduate and now an Officer in State Education Department, Johor Bahru.  and he married to Fatimah Jamil (also my classmate in Form 3), Ahmad Noh Jeni (grad UM, now Selangor BSN Vice President), Mohd Adil and Ngatijah lost contact. However i found out from internet that Ngatijah is working as a Guru Penolong Kanan at Sek Keb Kulai 1 (2011) and Mohd Adil is also a teacher and teaching in SK Rengit, B.Pahat. Later in 2015, I got the info that Ngatijah is married to Ayub Misman (also our ex-classmate)

BELASUNGKAWA

Almarhum Cikgu Uiop Kasim

Almarhum Cikgu Hamzah bin Hj Selak
