They gathered early before the arrival of Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and the rest of the royal family.
Among those present were his consort, Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail, the sultan's mother, Enche' Besar Khalsom Abdullah, the sultan's elder siblings, Tunku Puteri Johor Tunku Kamariah Sultan Iskandar and Tunku Besar Zabedah Sultan Iskandar, Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and state executive councillors.
The crowd stood up to sing the state anthem, Lagu Bangsa Johor, upon the sultan's arrival. He then cut a cake as the crowd sang Happy Birthday with the Johor Military Force band playing to the tune.
A total of 15 cakes were presented by various hotels and was distributed to the crowd. Guests were also feted to a sumptuous cuisine served at more than 50 stalls erected around Dataran Bandaraya.
Energetic performances and graceful movements by a zapin troupe, Chinese traditional drummers and an Orang Asli group wowed the audience.
Mimi Suni, 19, one of the performers from the Orang Seletar tribe, said the Yok Sang crab dance was staged by 28 performers, including 10 Orang Seletar dancers.
A tourist from the Czech Republic, Blanka Sirova, 40, said she was mesmerised by the cultural dances and took the opportunity to snap some shots.
"It is a wonderful celebration as there is nothing like this back home."
The advertising agency worker and her husband, Josef Sir, 50, were sailing around Asia and had berthed their yacht in Danga Bay here.
